Understanding what cosmetic dental services are
Cosmetic dental services primarily focus on improving dental aesthetics through color, position, shape, alignment, and size. Unlike general dentistry, this kind of dental work aims to enhance appearance rather than improve functionality or oral health. Most cosmetic dental work is considered elective. Unlike other dental services, cosmetic ones are usually not required for health or medical reasons.
Although any dentist with a general dentistry degree can provide cosmetic dental services, many take additional education courses. It is important to select a skilled and experienced cosmetic dentist to get the desired results. Looking at patient photos, reviews, and having consultations can be helpful in choosing the right procedure and dentist.

Benefits of cosmetic dental services
Getting a cosmetic dental service done can improve a person's self-confidence and boost their self-image. Research from a 2007 study found that 46% of surveyed adults thought having cosmetic dentistry would enhance their appearance, and 30% reported shame or embarrassment about their appearance because of their teeth. People who experience insecurity due to aesthetic issues with their teeth may experience emotional benefits from seeking cosmetic dentistry.
Although cosmetic dentistry's primary aim is to address aesthetic concerns, it can have the additional benefit of facilitating and supporting healthy teeth and gums. Many of the common procedures have oral health benefits along with cosmetic components. For example, bonding creates a whiter, brighter, straighter smile while removing cracks and gaps where decay can accumulate.

Common cosmetic dental services
Whether a person wants to brighten their teeth or replace a missing tooth, there is a wide variety of cosmetic options available to help achieve a more aesthetic appearance. Most cosmetic dental procedures are fairly simple; however, some are more complex and require specialized care. Some of these common cosmetic dental services include:
- Bonding: Dental bonding is a cosmetic solution to fix stains, gaps in the teeth, and chipped teeth. Resin is molded and shaped to fit on the teeth, which gives the appearance of a bright, straight smile. It is a quick and minimally invasive procedure.
- Dental implants: Implants are a popular method used to replace missing teeth. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, around half a million people receive implants every year. This technique provides a stable foundation for artificial teeth, and it helps prevent bone loss. Implants also look and function in the same way as natural teeth.
- Gum recontouring: Sometimes the patient’s problem has to do with the gums as opposed to the teeth. An uneven gum line or excess gum tissue can interfere with the look of a smile. Gum recontouring is a cosmetic procedure that changes the shape and appearance of the gums. Typically, a laser adds or takes away gum tissue.
- Inlays and onlays: These treatments help restore the look teeth after damage. Inlays are made from durable material and repair the chewing surfaces of teeth. Onlays cover a larger surface area and are also considered indirect fillings as well as a crown alternative. Both inlays and onlays provide natural tooth preservation, stability, and strength.
- Teeth whitening: Dark drinks, food, smoking, and medication can all stain teeth. There are various over-the-counter whitening products, but whitening done under a dental professional’s supervision is usually more effective. Teeth whitening is one of the most popular cosmetic dental services.

Check out what others are saying about our dental services on Google: Combining multiple cosmetic treatments
As cosmetic dentistry is primarily aesthetic, many patients have various treatments they would like to have done to achieve the smile they want. At the same time, we may recommend multiple treatments to help them achieve their desired results. Although many treatments can go hand in hand, not all patients may be a candidate for multiple treatments.
A smile makeover involves the combination of two or more treatments to achieve an overall brighter and healthier smile. Patients who have fairly healthy teeth and gums can generally undergo more than one treatment without any issues. However, those with dental or oral health issues, especially concerning the gums or jaw, may not qualify for a certain treatment that can do more harm than good. A few treatments, such as dental implants, may also require prerequisite treatments like bone grafting to help with this impediment.

Frequently asked questions
Permanency will depend on the service received. Some procedures like teeth whitening are less permanent and require upkeep, while other procedures like crowns will have more long-term use. Good oral hygiene and making regular dental visits are essential to maintaining results as long as possible.
While some treatments can cause minor discomfort, most procedures will involve little recovery time. Discomfort level and pain will depend on the specific treatment received. Following aftercare instructions can help prevent complications such as infection.
Patients may feel some temporary sensitivity to cold, heat, or pressure after getting tooth whitening done. Some tips to reduce sensitivity are brushing gently and avoiding hot and cold drinks immediately after. Most tooth sensitivity will disappear in 48 hours.
There are many resources available online to help people decide what treatments will deliver the desired results. Consultations can help patients determine the best treatment plan and set up realistic expectations. It is also helpful to look at before and after photos of other patients to see the treatment results.
Most dentists require patients to stop smoking before providing any cosmetic dental service. Tobacco is one of the leading causes of tooth decay and can cause implant and tooth whitening issues. Smoking also damages the gums, which makes it challenging to place crowns and implants safely.
